Summary
- Lotus introduces a powerful plug-in hybrid Eletre SUV, challenging rivals.
- The new hybrid SUV boasts impressive performance figures and electric range.
- This move reflects market demand and financial strategy for Lotus.

Lotus has officially shifted its strategy away from an immediate all-electric future by releasing a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its Eletre SUV. This new model is slated for release in Europe this summer, marking a move towards combustion power after previous commitments to an EV-only lineup.
The Eletre PHEV integrates a 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine with electric motors on each axle, resulting in an all-wheel-drive system. Lotus claims a combined output of 939bhp, surpassing the performance of its pure-electric counterpart, the Eletre R, and achieving 0 to 62mph in just 3.3 seconds. The brand is positioning this SUV against luxury competitors like the Lamborghini Urus and Ferrari Purosangue.
This strategic change is reportedly a response to slower-than-expected demand for Lotus's electric models and aims to improve financial performance, following a significant operating loss in the first nine months of 2025. The PHEV is expected to enhance sales in markets where EV adoption is progressing more gradually.
Lotus also highlights the Eletre PHEV's electric-only range of up to 220 miles (CLTC cycle) and a total combined range of 880 miles. The battery supports rapid charging, capable of going from 30% to 80% in just eight minutes. Lotus is reportedly planning further PHEV expansions, including a version of the Emira sports car.
