LG Display's Maskless OLED Tech Promises Brighter Screens
17 Oct
Summary
- LG's new FLiPP technology significantly improves OLED production efficiency.
- FLiPP enhances luminance by 1.6x and longevity by 2.4x.
- Mass production of FLiPP OLEDs for monitors is expected by late 2027.
LG Display is pioneering a groundbreaking OLED manufacturing technique called FLiPP, or FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning. This advanced process eliminates the need for fine metal masks, which are traditionally used to deposit organic emissive materials.
Instead, FLiPP utilizes photolithography and etching to refine materials deposited directly onto the glass. This method significantly enhances production efficiency, raising the utilization rate from 75% to over 93% and improving organic emissive material usage from 40% to 74%.
The benefits of FLiPP include a 1.6x boost in luminance, a 2.4x improvement in longevity, and a 13% reduction in power consumption. These advancements allow for brighter, more reliable, or more power-efficient OLED displays.
Currently in its initial development stage, FLiPP is expected to transition to product development and then mass production. LG Display aims to commence production for smaller displays, such as monitors and laptops, by late 2027. The company is evaluating existing production lines for potential reuse to minimize costs.
