Law Firms Hit by Wave of Cyberattacks
10 Sep
Summary
- Two major law firms disclosed recent data security breaches.
- Sensitive client information, including Social Security numbers, was exposed.
- Cyberattacks targeting law firms are on the rise due to valuable data.
Two prominent U.S. law firms, Greenberg Traurig and Eckert Seamans, recently revealed substantial data security breaches. These incidents have spotlighted the growing cyber threats confronting the legal sector.
Greenberg Traurig confirmed that an unauthorized actor accessed and posted a limited number of documents on the dark web. While the firm stated its core systems were not compromised, it notified affected clients and alerted the Vermont attorney general about the exposure of Social Security information.
Meanwhile, Eckert Seamans faces proposed class action lawsuits following its disclosure of a recent breach. The lawsuits allege that a social engineering attack targeting an attorney led to the unauthorized access of client files, exposing dates of birth and Social Security numbers.
This trend of law firms being targeted by cybercriminals is escalating. A report indicated a near doubling of law firm cyber incidents in the previous year. Firms like Quinn Emanuel, McDermott Will & Schulte, Herbert Smith Freehills, Goodwin Procter, and WilmerHale have also recently disclosed similar breaches, often stemming from social engineering tactics.
