Beware '1.1TB' Laptops: It's Just Cloud Storage!
9 Mar
Summary
- Sellers list HP laptops with 1.1TB storage, but 1TB is a limited-time cloud trial.
- Actual internal storage is only 128GB, insufficient for modern Windows OS.
- Marketplace oversight is lacking, allowing misleading sales tactics to flourish.

Misleading sales tactics are on the rise, particularly concerning affordable laptops. Listings for HP laptops on platforms like Amazon and Newegg have advertised "1.1TB" of storage. However, this total includes a one-year promotional trial of 1TB OneDrive cloud storage, with the device's physical internal storage being only 128GB.
This limited internal storage is insufficient for modern operating systems like Windows 11, which requires significant space for updates. The cloud storage promotion, initially free, converts to a costly subscription after one year. These deceptive listings are primarily from third-party sellers, exploiting a lack of oversight on large e-commerce sites.
The situation is exacerbated by a current "RAM crisis," making affordable laptops harder to find. Sellers have also been caught misrepresenting RAM specifications, listing "up to 32GB" while the actual installed amount is as low as 4GB. Consumers are advised to exercise extreme caution and verify all specifications before purchasing budget laptops.
