KDE Plasma 6.8 beta 1 has been released, signaling significant advancements in the popular open-source desktop environment. This update focuses on dramatic graphics improvements, aiming for a smoother user experience and enhanced performance.
Key among the enhancements is the default enablement of triple buffering for Nvidia GPUs. This graphics rendering technique utilizes three buffers instead of two, resulting in noticeably smoother animations and improved performance, especially beneficial for gaming and general desktop responsiveness.
Further enhancing the visual experience, KDE Plasma 6.8 introduces the second part of its public tech preview for the Union theming engine. This CSS-based engine aims to resolve theme fragmentation by allowing creators to style Plasma, QtQuick, and QtWidget applications with a single set of rules, ensuring a consistent look and feel.
The remote desktop feature in 6.8 also sees a reduction in latency, offering faster and smoother remote sessions. Additionally, the Wayland commit-timing protocol has been merged into KWin, improving support for Adaptive-Sync/FreeSync technologies, which is crucial for users engaging in video playback or gaming.
In a notable shift, KDE Plasma 6.8 is now exclusively a Wayland desktop, having fully removed support for X11. Other improvements include enhanced System Settings search capabilities, the option to disable Autostart entries without deletion, screen recording with audio via Spectacle, and the addition of dwell clicker and middle-click scrolling functionalities.
