Summary
- Kavach system now active on 190 km of Delhi-Howrah corridor.
- Enables train speeds up to 160 kmph, enhancing safety.
- Indigenously developed ATP system is part of 'Make in India'.

Indian Railways has commissioned the Kavach Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system on a crucial 190 route kilometre section between Prayagraj and Kanpur. This implementation, active since March 22, 2026, on the busy Delhi-Howrah corridor, marks a substantial advancement in railway safety and operational speed.
The Kavach system, an indigenous 'Make in India' initiative, is designed to significantly reduce accidents by preventing human error and enhancing overall reliability. Its activation on the Prayagraj-Kanpur stretch clears the path for trains to achieve speeds of up to 160 kmph.
This deployment follows extensive trials, including passenger runs, covering over 20,000 km. Previously, Version 4.0 of Kavach was installed on 1,452 route kilometres along the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes. Future plans include expanding the system to the Ghaziabad-Tundla section as part of Mission Raftaar.
