Japan's Feature Phones Face Extinction
12 Oct
Summary
- Japanese feature phones, or gara-kei, are declining rapidly.
- Smartphones now dominate Japan's mobile market significantly.
- Carrier 3G data service termination accelerates the decline.

The venerable gara-kei, Japan's distinctive feature phones with physical keyboards, are facing obsolescence. These 'Galapagos keitai' phones, once a staple in Japan's unique tech landscape, are succumbing to the global smartphone dominance. Consumer habits have shifted dramatically, with a Docomo survey indicating smartphones comprised 90 percent of mobile phone owners in 2021.
This trend is projected to intensify, with smartphones expected to represent 98 percent of users by 2025. Feature phone shipments in Japan saw a sharp decline of over 25 percent, falling below 400,000 units in the first half of fiscal year 2025. The final blow for many remaining gara-kei users came in March of this year, when carrier NTT Docomo discontinued its 3G data service, effectively ending support for many older devices.
