Summary
- Jaguar unveils Type 01, a 1000bhp electric GT saloon.
- The vehicle boasts a 400-mile EPA range and fast charging.
- Luxury EV sales are stagnant despite new models.

Jaguar has officially revealed the production version of its distinctive Type 01 electric GT saloon, marking its first new EV since the I-Pace in 2018. The four-door saloon, built on an all-aluminum structure, adheres closely to its concept, featuring "exuberant proportions" and a sleek silhouette. Jaguar states the Type 01 is a "copy of nothing," aiming for a unique position in the market.
The Type 01 is equipped with an 850-volt electrical architecture, providing an EPA-estimated range of 400 miles, with 320 miles achievable at sustained highway speeds. Its tri-motor setup delivers approximately 1,000bhp, enabling a 0-62mph acceleration in 3.2 seconds. Charging is rapid, with the ability to gain 200 miles in 13 minutes via 350kW outlets.
Inside, the Type 01 features a 24-inch OLED screen and a design described as "exuberant modernist." However, the luxury EV market faces significant headwinds. Recent sales data indicates a slowdown for high-end electric vehicles, with declines reported for models like the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT. Residual values also remain a concern for luxury EVs, potentially deterring buyers.
While the Type 01 is positioned as a halo model to generate interest in Jaguar's new electric direction, its success is crucial for the company's future. Jaguar is expected to introduce more conventional EVs, including SUVs, on its new electric platform. The Type 01's reception and sales performance will be a key indicator of the brand's ability to navigate the competitive and challenging luxury EV segment.
