Israelis Targeted by Fake Safety App Spyware
6 Mar
Summary
- Hackers use fake safety alerts to distribute spyware.
- Malicious app steals location data, texts, and passwords.
- Arid Viper group suspected in cyberespionage campaign.

Cybersecurity research has uncovered a malicious campaign targeting Israelis by distributing spyware through a fake smartphone application. Attackers are sending deceptive text messages, appearing to come from the Israeli Home Front Command, encouraging recipients to download an updated 'red alert' app.
This ploy leads unsuspecting users to install spyware that covertly records location data and steals personal information like text messages, passwords, and contacts. Researchers suspect the advanced threat actor known as Arid Viper is responsible for this operation.
The campaign highlights how critical emergency infrastructure can be exploited during times of heightened conflict. Separately, attackers have also attempted to breach surveillance cameras in Israel and other Middle Eastern nations.
