iPhone Update Cripples Calls, Blocks Triple Zero Access
28 Jan
Summary
- iPhone 8 models cannot make or receive calls after an update.
- The software issue also prevents calling emergency services.
- Apple has paused the update while investigating the problem.

A recent Apple software update, intended to improve emergency call functionality, has inadvertently caused severe calling disruptions for several iPhone models on the Telstra network. Specifically, iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X users are reportedly unable to place or receive calls, critically including emergency services like Triple Zero.
Following user reports beginning shortly after the January 26 update, Telstra confirmed it was prioritizing an investigation with Apple. As a precautionary measure, Telstra advised customers to defer software updates on affected devices. Apple has since paused the rollout of this software while the issue is being thoroughly examined.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the reliability of Triple Zero services, particularly after a major Optus outage last year impacted emergency calls. The latest Apple update aimed to prevent similar failures for its users by ensuring connection to alternate networks. However, the current glitch has rendered affected iPhones nearly unusable for communication outside of Wi-Fi, undermining the update's original purpose.
