Apple's Foldable Arrives: Ultra vs. Pro Max Price Shock!
6 Jul
Summary
- Apple's first foldable, iPhone Ultra, may use Touch ID instead of Face ID.
- The iPhone Ultra is expected to cost around $2,500, significantly more than the Pro Max.
- iPhone Ultra lacks a telephoto lens, potentially impacting long-range photography.

This September, Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable smartphone, tentatively named the iPhone Ultra, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The iPhone Ultra is anticipated to feature a design similar to other foldables, opening to a large internal display for enhanced productivity and media consumption, with iOS 27 adapted for multitasking. In contrast, the iPhone 18 Pro Max will maintain a traditional single-screen design.
Camera capabilities may differ significantly. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to include a variable aperture on its 48MP lenses for improved photography. The iPhone Ultra, however, is reported to have only two rear cameras, notably missing the telephoto lens found on Pro models, which could limit its long-range shooting performance.
Battery life is another area of potential divergence. While the iPhone Ultra is predicted to have a battery between 5,000 and 5,500 mAh, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to offer superior stamina, potentially exceeding the 18 hours achieved by its predecessor.
Security features are also set to vary. Reports suggest the iPhone Ultra will revert to Touch ID for authentication, as fitting Face ID into a foldable form factor presents challenges. The iPhone 18 Pro Max will continue to utilize Face ID, a feature refined since its 2017 introduction.
Pricing is a key distinction, with the iPhone Ultra estimated to cost a substantial $2,500, positioning it as a premium early adopter device. The iPhone 18 Pro Max, while still a high-end device, is expected to be considerably less expensive, making it the more practical choice for many users. Both devices are anticipated to offer similar performance levels, with the Ultra potentially featuring advanced cooling.
