iPhone 18 Pro: Display Cutout Shrinks in 2026
28 Jan
Summary
- iPhone 18 Pro may feature under-display Face ID components.
- Variable aperture and stacked image sensor for main camera.
- New A20 Pro chipset built on TSMC's 2nm process.

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, anticipated for a September 2026 launch, are rumored to introduce substantial design and camera improvements. Leaks suggest a move towards under-display Face ID technology, potentially reducing the front display's cutout to a single hole and repositioning the front camera. The Dynamic Island is expected to remain but in a more compact form.
Camera enhancements are also a key focus, with reports indicating a possible variable aperture system for the main camera, allowing for more naturalistic photos, particularly in low light. This feature might be exclusive to the Pro Max model. Both models could benefit from a new three-layer stacked image sensor and larger apertures for improved low-light photography and video.
Internally, the devices are expected to be powered by the A20 Pro chipset, manufactured using TSMC's 2nm process. This new chip could feature an integrated RAM design, boosting performance, power efficiency, and thermal management by an estimated 15% and 30% respectively. This could also lead to space optimization for larger batteries or improved cooling.
