iPhone's Bluetooth Gets Superpowers with Channel Sounding

Summary
- iOS 27 adds Bluetooth Channel Sounding for iPhones.
- Channel Sounding enables precise distance and direction tracking.
- Adoption of Bluetooth 6.3 for Channel Sounding will be slow.

Apple's iOS 27, announced at WWDC, includes support for Bluetooth Channel Sounding, a feature first introduced in Bluetooth 6.0. This technology enables devices to determine precise location, distance, and direction, significantly enhancing spatial awareness.
This upgrade is poised to revolutionize Apple's Find My network, extending its capabilities to third-party Bluetooth devices. Previously, precise tracking relied on expensive Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chips, largely limiting enhanced location features to Apple's own ecosystem. Channel Sounding aims to bridge this gap, offering centimeter-level accuracy for devices like headphones, trackers, and smart locks.
However, widespread implementation faces hurdles. Channel Sounding requires Bluetooth 6.3, a standard adopted by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group in May 2026. iPhones equipped with Apple's N1 networking chip, found in the iPhone 17 lineup and future models, will support this feature. Despite its potential, many peripheral devices currently support older Bluetooth versions like 5.4, suggesting a gradual rollout over the next year or more.
