Last Chance to Download Encrypted Instagram Chats

As of May 8, 2026, Instagram will no longer offer end-to-end encryption for its direct messages. This feature, which required users to opt-in, had a significantly low adoption rate, prompting Meta to remove it. Users who have utilized this encryption are being advised to download any messages or media they wish to preserve before the deadline.

The removal means that private messages on Instagram will no longer be shielded by default from potential access. While the encryption option previously allowed users to keep conversations private, its discontinuation directs users seeking such security to WhatsApp. Meta has indicated that the transition is straightforward for those who want to maintain encrypted communication channels, highlighting WhatsApp as the alternative.

The company announced in March that the feature would be phased out for its approximately 3 billion users globally. The spokesperson reiterated that the plan remains unchanged, emphasizing that the option is being removed due to minimal usage. Users needing to download their affected chats may need to update their Instagram application to the latest version.
