Instagram's E2EE Messages Ending 2026
16 Mar
Summary
- Instagram E2EE messaging support ends May 8, 2026.
- Users must download chat history before deadline.
- WhatsApp retains E2EE; Instagram follows different path.

Instagram's end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging will cease to be supported on May 8, 2026. This significant policy shift will impact how users' conversations are protected.
Meta has begun informing users about the upcoming discontinuation. To preserve their data, individuals with affected chats are instructed to download their media and message history. Older versions of the app must be updated for these download tools to function correctly before the deadline.
End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient can access conversation content, with special keys preventing even Meta from reading messages. After May 8, 2026, these keys will no longer be supported for the affected chats, removing this layer of privacy.
While Instagram is phasing out this feature, other messaging services are maintaining it. WhatsApp, also owned by Meta, continues to offer E2EE by default, as do apps like Signal and Telegram's "Secret Chats."
