Indonesia Bans Grok Amid Sexual Content Concerns
10 Jan
Summary
- Indonesia blocked Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot over sexualized content risks.
- xAI restricted image generation to paid users to fix safeguard lapses.
- Australia and Europe are also investigating Grok's exploitative content.

Indonesia became the first country to block Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot on Saturday, citing risks associated with AI-generated pornography. This decisive move by the Indonesian government underscores growing international apprehension towards the AI tool's potential for misuse.
The Indonesian communications and digital ministry stated that non-consensual sexual deepfakes are a serious violation of human rights and digital security. The ministry has summoned X officials to discuss the matter further. This action follows xAI's announcement on Thursday to restrict image generation and editing to paying subscribers in an effort to rectify safeguard issues.
Concerns about Grok's capacity to generate sexualized and exploitative content have also been raised by authorities in Europe and Australia. The Australian Prime Minister expressed that using generative AI for such purposes is abhorrent, and the eSafety Office is monitoring the situation, prepared to use its powers to remove harmful material.
