28 Sep
Summary
- A flight-capable rotating detonation engine was successfully tested on the ground.
- The new engine could offer over three times the thrust-to-weight ratio.
- Flight tests are planned for next year, aiming for Mach 3+ speeds.
An Indian defense startup, Deep Propulsion, is poised to conduct the first flight test of its innovative rotating detonation engine next year. This technology promises to revolutionize India's missile capabilities.
Deep Propulsion CEO Saurav Jha confirmed that a flight-capable version of the engine has already undergone successful ground tests. The company aims to demonstrate positive thrust and acceleration to Mach 3 or higher during the upcoming flight trials. These tests are crucial for validating the engine's performance.
The rotating detonation engine utilizes a combustion process that occurs at supersonic speeds, significantly faster than conventional jet engines. Jha highlighted that this technology could provide over three times the thrust-to-weight ratio compared to traditional engines.
Deep Propulsion is initially focusing on achieving high supersonic speeds, targeting a range between Mach 1.5 and Mach 4.5. The engine's design could also offer a substantial range boost of 30-35% for existing airframes. Furthermore, significant gains are anticipated by designing new missile systems specifically around this smaller, more powerful engine.
The company is also investing in its own testing infrastructure, including a combustor test facility capable of handling significant airflow. This strategic development underscores Deep Propulsion's commitment to advancing propulsion technology for India's defense sector.
