8 Oct
Summary
- Mobile internet speeds in India have increased ten-fold since 2022.
- 5G connectivity now reaches every district across the country.
- A 2GB movie download could take minutes instead of twenty.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a remarkable ten-fold increase in India's mobile internet speeds since 2022, the year 5G services were launched. Speaking at the 10th India Mobile Congress in New Delhi, he confirmed that 5G connectivity has successfully reached all districts of the country.
With over 5.5 lakh active 5G base stations, the average mobile broadband download speed has dramatically improved. Theoretical download times for large files have been drastically reduced; a 2 GB movie, which previously took around 20 minutes, can now be downloaded in approximately two minutes. For larger 5 GB files, this transition is from nearly 49 minutes to about five minutes.
These advancements extend beyond theoretical speeds, impacting daily user experiences. Faster downloads for apps and games, quicker uploads of high-resolution videos, and significantly reduced cloud backup times for photos and videos are now realities for consumers. While actual speeds can vary based on network conditions and device, the overall improvement signifies a major digital transformation for India.
