India Launches First Hydrogen Train!
17 Jul
Summary
- India's first hydrogen-powered train operates on the Jind-Sonipat route.
- The train uses hydrogen fuel cells for cleaner electricity generation.
- It can carry 2,600 passengers with a maximum speed of 75 kmph.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated India's inaugural hydrogen-powered train, set to operate on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana. This pioneering initiative employs hydrogen fuel cell technology for electricity generation, presenting a sustainable alternative to diesel locomotives and establishing India as one of the few nations with such trains.
The 10-car trainset features a 1200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system and is approved for speeds up to 75 kmph, with a design speed of 110 kmph. It boasts a passenger capacity of approximately 2,600 and was developed entirely from design to prototype manufacturing within India. This project includes essential hydrogen storage and refueling infrastructure.
India joins countries like Germany, Japan, China, and the United States in exploring hydrogen-powered rail transport. Germany pioneered the Alstom Coradia iLint, while Japan plans to launch its 'Hybari' train by fiscal 2027. California introduced its first hydrogen-powered train, Zemu, in 2024, costing $20 million.
