India has launched its first barrier-free toll plaza on the Mumbai-Delhi National Highway (NH-48) near Surat. This new facility, located on the Kamrej-Choryasi stretch, employs Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling technology, enabling vehicles to pass through without halting. This initiative by the National Highways Authority of India is part of a national plan to modernize highway infrastructure.
The barrier-free system, which uses FASTag for automated deduction, has received positive feedback from commuters. Drivers report considerable time and fuel savings, as the previous need to stop at toll booths has been eliminated. This contactless system scans vehicles and deducts tolls automatically.
Officials confirmed that vehicles can maintain speeds of up to 80 kmph while passing the toll point, ensuring uninterrupted movement. For vehicles without FASTag, number plate recognition will be used for toll payment. This pilot project in Surat is a precursor to a nationwide rollout expected by the end of 2026.
