India's ambitious high-speed rail project is slated for its first operational phase on August 15, 2027. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the inaugural service will run on a 100 km stretch between Surat and Vapi, a revised plan from an earlier 50 km route. This marks a significant step for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor.
The entire 508 km corridor, designed for trains reaching 320 kmph, will eventually connect Ahmedabad and Mumbai, passing through several major cities. The phased rollout aims for safe and efficient operations, with the full corridor expected to reduce travel time drastically. Construction has seen substantial progress, with extensive foundation and pier work completed.
Originally planned for completion by December 2023, the project experienced delays attributed to land acquisition and execution challenges, leading to the revised timeline. The government has invested ₹85,801 crore so far, with ongoing technical and financial support from Japan.
