27 Apr
Summary
- Barrier-free tolling to launch on select highways by December 2026.
- Vehicles can pass tolls at up to 80 kmph without stopping.
- FASTag and AI cameras will be used for dual toll collection verification.

India is embracing a new era of highway travel, with barrier-free tolling slated for select national highways by December 2026. This initiative, announced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, aims to eliminate traffic congestion at toll plazas.
The Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology will enable vehicles to pass through toll points at speeds up to 80 kmph without the need to stop. This system relies on a dual-verification process integrating FASTag with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology.
High-performance AI cameras will read license plates, while RFID scanners process FASTag information, deducting tolls automatically. This ensures accurate collection and continuity, even if a FASTag is inactive or missing. The government anticipates significant economic benefits, including annual savings of up to Rs 8,000 crore and a reduction in logistics costs.
Strict enforcement measures are in place, with e-notices for non-compliance. Continued failure to pay may result in FASTag suspension and penalties linked to the VAHAN database. This move aligns with India's broader goal of enhancing road infrastructure efficiency.
