India's artificial intelligence companies recently showcased their homegrown technologies at the AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded three new AI models released by Indian firms, emphasizing "Made in India" innovation and India's growing capabilities in the AI field. Sarvam AI, a notable startup, unveiled two large language models trained entirely within India and optimized for 22 Indian languages.
The five-day summit, the largest of its kind and the first hosted in a developing nation, saw Indian businesses forge agreements with US tech giants. These partnerships aim to build extensive data center infrastructure crucial for training and operating advanced AI systems. Gnani.ai also presented its Vachana speech models, designed for natural-sounding voice generation in Indian languages.
Experts note that while India's computational power may not yet match global leaders, its trajectory points towards becoming the world's largest AI adoption market. The development of India-specific AI models is seen as crucial for serving the nation's vast population and potentially offering alternatives for the Global South, addressing cultural and ethical biases present in Western-centric AI.
The summit also addressed critical concerns regarding job disruption due to AI, particularly impacting India's extensive call center industry. The BharatGen initiative, supported by the government, also introduced a new multilingual AI model, underscoring the nation's push for "sovereign AI" and reduced reliance on foreign platforms.
