Regulator Eyes Uniform OTP Messages to Boost Security
21 Oct
Summary
- India's telecom regulator plans to standardize OTP SMS formats.
- This aims to help users identify genuine messages and prevent fraud.
- Experts caution that standardization alone may not stop all scams.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is in discussions with telecom operators regarding the standardization of One-Time Password (OTP) SMS formats. This proposed change aims to make OTP messages more easily identifiable for consumers, helping them differentiate genuine transaction alerts from scam messages and thereby reducing the risk of imitation by fraudsters.
Discussions have included introducing consultation papers and potentially mandating specific elements within OTP messages, such as the purpose of generation, sender origin, and validity period. While the move is intended to bolster consumer awareness and combat misuse, some industry experts believe its effectiveness will be limited. They argue that while standardization aids new users in recognizing legitimate OTPs, it may not be sufficient on its own to prevent fraud, as scam artists could potentially copy templates. Telecom operators and the Department of Telecommunications have implemented various measures, including AI-powered SIM verification and fraud risk indicators, to combat financial fraud, with significant numbers of fraudulent connections disconnected.
