India's Data Centers to Explode: AI Fuels Growth

India's operational data center capacity is projected to quintuple to 12 GW by 2030, significantly expanding from 2.2 GW in 2025. This growth is propelled by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and substantial hyperscale cloud investments.

AI-dedicated capacity is expected to surge multifold to 6,546 MW by 2030, compared to 275 MW in 2025. Concurrently, data center electricity demand is forecast to grow substantially, reaching 191 terawatt-hours by 2040.

The expanding digital economy, with over a billion internet users and billions of monthly transactions, fuels the demand for robust data center infrastructure. Future investments are shifting towards states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Reliable and cost-competitive electricity has emerged as the primary constraint for the industry, with captive power generation and renewable power purchase agreements becoming crucial strategies for developers.

Water availability is an emerging risk, especially in water-stressed regions, prompting developers to consider advanced cooling technologies to manage freshwater consumption. The sector's long-term success hinges on securing power, managing water, and strategic site selection.
