India Moves to Ban Aadhaar Photocopies for Enhanced Privacy
10 Dec
Summary
- India plans to ban physical photocopying of Aadhaar cards.
- Hotels and event organizers must register for offline verification.
- Digital methods like QR codes and Aadhaar app will replace paper.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to introduce a new regulation that will discourage the physical photocopying and storage of Aadhaar cards. This initiative seeks to bolster user privacy and mitigate the risks associated with the potential misuse or leakage of sensitive Aadhaar data, moving away from traditional paper-based verification methods.
This upcoming rule will mandate that entities wishing to conduct offline Aadhaar verification, such as hotels and event organizers, must register with UIDAI. The authority intends to promote secure, digital alternatives, including scanning QR codes or utilizing the recently launched Aadhaar mobile application, to replace the collection of paper copies.
The shift is designed to increase transparency and control over personal information. By encouraging technology-enabled verification, India aims to ensure efficient identity checks while safeguarding Aadhaar holders' data and giving them greater control over its sharing.
