An innovation by IIT Madras promises to revolutionize Indian artillery by extending the range of 155mm shells by nearly 50% through the use of ramjet engine technology. This advancement replaces the conventional base-bleed unit, enabling sustained propulsion after the shell leaves the gun barrel. The development aims to provide commanders with greater tactical flexibility and deeper strike capabilities.
The ramjet engine utilizes the shell's high speed to compress air and mix it with fuel, generating thrust without complex moving parts. This cost-effective upgrade addresses a key limitation in modern artillery, where guns remain crucial due to their simplicity and low cost compared to missiles. The project, initiated in 2020 in collaboration with the Indian Army, has undergone extensive testing.
Successful trials were conducted at the School of Artillery, Deolali, in September 2025, followed by performance confirmation at higher operational zones during December 2025 trials at Pokhran Field Firing Range. Ongoing refinements are targeting full operational capability, with related projects exploring ramjet applications for rockets to further boost ranges.
