21 Oct
Summary
- Smart camera installed at Hull junction aids fire vehicle response.
- New technology replaces outdated wig-wag signal for faster exits.
- Camera ensures safer and more efficient emergency vehicle passage.
Hull's fire service is set to benefit from a new smart camera system installed at a key junction. This initiative, developed by Hull City Council, aims to improve response times for emergency vehicles departing from East Hull fire station. The camera is positioned at the intersection of Southcoates Lane and Rosmead Street.
Previously, the station relied on a wig-wag warning signal that only stopped traffic for 40 seconds. This proved insufficient due to traffic calming islands, parked cars, and narrow roads. The new camera detects emergency vehicles exiting the station, initiating the wig-wag sequence sooner and providing a more reliable traffic management solution.
This technology will help firefighters exit the station more safely and efficiently. It will provide motorists with a clear warning that an emergency vehicle is approaching, reducing delays and supporting faster responses across the city. The council confirmed the camera will only operate during emergencies and will not be used for enforcement.
