HP's AI Promises Easier Printing, Delivers Mixed Results

HP is rolling out "HP AI," a suite of features designed to make printing tasks more intuitive and efficient. The "Perfect Printing" feature, one of the current offerings, analyzes web pages to optimize layout and reduce paper and ink consumption. While it has demonstrated significant paper savings in testing, its performance varies across websites, sometimes failing to optimize content effectively or introducing formatting errors. HP acknowledges these inconsistencies and states that the AI is continuously learning and improving.

Beyond Perfect Printing, HP plans to introduce other AI-driven capabilities such as Precise Scan for professional-quality scans and Scan to Email Summary for automated email content. These advanced features are slated for future releases and will be extended to more printer models and regions. However, compatibility is a key factor, with many features requiring Microsoft's Printer Support Application technology, primarily available on Windows 11. HP is committed to expanding AI support to most recent and all future printer models, though early adopters may find current AI features to be an "early work in progress."
