Historian Exposes Flaws in Elon Musk's Grokipedia, His AI-Powered Encyclopedia

In November 2025, the world's richest person, Elon Musk, launched a new AI-powered encyclopedia called Grokipedia, which he claimed would be "better than Wikipedia." However, the launch has been plagued by issues, including numerous factual errors and the promotion of Musk's favored rightwing talking points.

One prominent historian, Sir Richard Evans, discovered that Grokipedia's entry about him contained false information, such as claims that he produced expert witness reports for a libel trial involving Holocaust denier David Irving and supervised theses on Bismarck's social policy - neither of which were true. Evans, an expert on the Third Reich, said the site's entries were problematic, with "chatroom contributions given equal status with serious academic work."

Grokipedia has also been criticized for lifting large chunks of content from the website it aims to replace, Wikipedia, while containing numerous inaccuracies. In the days after the launch, Musk himself took to his social media platform X to make controversial statements, including calling for "civil war in Britain" and urging the English to "ally with the hard men" like far-right agitator Tommy Robinson.

Despite Musk's claims that Grokipedia would provide a "comprehensive collection of all knowledge" and that he planned to etch it into a stable oxide and place copies in orbit, on the moon, and on Mars, the project has so far struggled to gain credibility. Experts like Evans have warned that the site's reliance on AI to gather information has led to the inclusion of unreliable sources and the promotion of Musk's personal political views.
