Spy Gadget Detectors Fail Victims

Commercial detection tools designed to help domestic abuse victims locate hidden surveillance devices have been found to offer a false sense of security. Researchers discovered that many of these detectors fail to adequately identify covert cameras, microphones, and trackers, leaving victims unaware of ongoing surveillance. Tests showed only a marginal improvement in device detection when participants used these tools compared to searching independently. Many users also struggled to interpret detector readings, experiencing anxiety from false positives or missed threats.

Experts highlighted that existing detectors are often not designed for at-risk users, sometimes emitting loud sounds that could alert the perpetrator. This lack of discretion makes them unsafe for use when living with an abuser. While manufacturers are encouraged to improve user guidance and reporting, the study emphasizes that stopping the sale of hidden spy devices is the most effective solution to prevent tech-facilitated abuse. Charities have noted a rise in victims finding hidden microphones and cameras, urging government action on product design, testing, marketing, and sales.
