Finland's capital, Helsinki, has officially opened the Kruunuvuori Bridge, recognized as the world's longest structure exclusively for trams, pedestrians, and cyclists. This 1,200-meter bridge, locally known as Kruunuvuorensilta, was unveiled recently, marking a significant achievement in urban infrastructure design.
Designed by Knight Architects, the bridge links Helsinki's city center with the island of Laajasalo, forming a central part of the Kruunusillat program. It embodies a global shift towards prioritizing low-carbon mobility and public spaces over car-centric corridors. The design intentionally encourages sustainable travel by making active transportation easier and quicker than driving.
A prominent feature is its 135-meter-high diamond-shaped concrete pylon, the tallest bridge structure in Finland. This contemporary landmark is visible across the city and from the air, providing a distinctive identity. The bridge is engineered for a 200-year lifespan, incorporating solutions for Helsinki's extreme weather conditions, such as ice-preventing cable sheaths and a wind warning system.
The project's total carbon footprint is estimated at 129,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. Emissions were reduced through the use of low-emission materials and renewable energy. Architects hope the bridge will become a symbol of a broader shift towards more sustainable living over the next two centuries.
