EU Study: Your Headphones May Harm Your Health
14 Mar
Summary
- Headphones from top brands contain hormone-disrupting chemicals.
- These chemicals are linked to reproductive and neurodevelopmental issues.
- Retailers are removing some headphone models due to study findings.

A recent EU-funded study has revealed the presence of hormone-disrupting chemicals in 81 types of headphones from leading brands, including Apple, Beats, and Samsung. Researchers identified chemicals such as bisphenols and phthalates, which are associated with reproductive health issues and neurodevelopmental problems. These substances were found in various concentrations across tested products, raising concerns about cumulative exposure.
As a result, some European retailers have started removing specific headphone models from their shelves. While the chemicals were detected in low levels, their widespread use in consumer products like headphones highlights a significant, often overlooked, public health issue. The study authors advocate for a systemic approach to ban and phase out harmful chemicals.
Manufacturers like Bose, Sennheiser, and Marshall maintain their products meet legal safety standards, though some questioned the study's methodology. The report's goal was not to deter purchases but to raise awareness about daily chemical exposures and their cumulative risks, especially for vulnerable groups like children and pregnant individuals. Gaming headsets showed particularly poor results, prompting calls for stronger legislation and greater transparency in the electronics industry.
