India's Chip Dream: HCL-Foxconn JV Breaks Ground

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the HCL-Foxconn Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly Test (OSAT) joint venture in Jewar is a critical step toward achieving self-reliance in the semiconductor supply chain. This initiative positions India among global leaders in chip manufacturing, addressing both software and hardware aspects.
The Rs 3,700 crore joint venture, named India Chip Private Limited, is a 60:40 partnership between HCL Group and Foxconn. Government incentives are expected to cover 60-70% of the total investment. The facility is projected to be operational by 2028.
Spanning nearly 48 acres, the OSAT facility will initially occupy 15 acres and plans a capacity of 20,000 wafers monthly. Notably, it will be India's inaugural display driver integrated circuit chip OSAT unit, signifying a major advancement.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted semiconductors as foundational technology driving manufacturing opportunities. HCL Group's chairperson, Roshni Nadar Malhotra, emphasized the project's importance to HCL's growth and India's tech ecosystem. Foxconn's president, Bob Chen, affirmed the JV's goal to build reliable assembly and testing operations for domestic and global clients, underscoring collaborative efforts.
