AI Robots Accelerate Solar Panel Installation
21 Jul
Summary
- Gritt uses AI and off-the-shelf hardware for faster solar installation.
- Startup secured $26 million in Series A funding.
- Gritt's systems can quadruple a crew's daily panel installation output.

The global push for solar energy and battery deployment to achieve energy independence and combat climate change faces a significant hurdle: a shortage of skilled labor. Addressing this challenge, Gritt, a startup founded by Carnegie Mellon roboticists, has emerged with an intelligent system designed to expedite infrastructure construction. The company recently announced a $26 million Series A funding round, led by Obvious Ventures, bringing its total funding to $34 million.
Gritt differentiates itself by integrating AI models with readily available hardware, such as rented skidders and robotic arms. This approach allows their systems to operate effectively in unstructured outdoor environments. The AI controls the robots to perform tasks like unloading solar panels and precisely positioning them onto frames, enabling human workers to complete the installation faster. This technology has shown remarkable efficiency gains, with Gritt's systems enabling a typical eight-person crew to install 3,000 to 4,000 panels per day, a substantial increase from the usual 800.
The company has secured contracts to install 2.8 gigawatts of solar panels within the next 18 months and is working with three of the top 10 US power construction companies. Gritt plans to deploy 48 systems in the coming six months. Beyond panel installation, Gritt aims to expand its system's capabilities to include fastening panels, drilling posts, building racks, and eventually, moving into other labor-intensive construction tasks like tying rebar. The advancements in AI models have been crucial for Gritt's success, enabling the generalization of tasks and reducing training time significantly.
