GoPro Lit Hero: Small Camera, Big Compromises
7 Mar
Summary
- Tiny screen and limited controls make operation frustrating.
- Image quality suffers, especially in low light conditions.
- An affordable entry, but too many features were stripped away.

GoPro's Lit Hero, released on October 21, 2025, is positioned as an affordable entry into the action camera market. However, its ultra-compact design, while enhancing portability, leads to significant usability issues. The diminutive 1.76-inch LCD touchscreen is fiddly and unresponsive, making setting adjustments and image previews challenging, especially for those with larger hands.
Manual controls are severely limited, catering primarily to a point-and-shoot experience rather than creative control. Image quality is adequate in good light but deteriorates rapidly in low-light conditions due to the small sensor, with footage described as far from pro-level despite 4K shooting capabilities.
The camera features a powerful, albeit often overkill, LED lamp. While it starts up quickly and maintains focus in low light, the lack of in-camera image stabilization necessitates a laborious transfer and stabilization process via the GoPro Quik app, which itself can suffer from unstable connections.
Despite its drawbacks, the Lit Hero is waterproof up to 16ft and boasts a good battery life of around 90 minutes of continuous use. However, its overall value is questioned, with pricing perceived as driven by brand name rather than premium features, leaving it struggling to find a distinct target market.
