28 Jan
Summary
- Google is reportedly developing a new OS called Aluminium OS.
- Early screen recordings of Aluminium OS have appeared online.
- The new OS merges ChromeOS features with Android capabilities.

Google appears to be developing a successor to ChromeOS, codenamed Aluminium OS. This new platform is expected to merge the functionalities of ChromeOS with the Android operating system. Recent leaks have provided the first visual insights into Aluminium OS, featuring screen recordings that surfaced via a Google Chrome Issue Tracker bug report.
The leaked videos, reportedly captured on an HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook, show Aluminium OS running in split-screen mode with two Chrome windows side-by-side. The interface displays a design similar to ChromeOS, but notably moves the start button to the center of the taskbar. A new, taller status bar at the top provides enhanced visibility for battery levels, connectivity, time (including seconds), and indicates active screen recording.
These visual leaks suggest that Aluminium OS, referencing Android 16, is in active development. Google is anticipated to officially share more information about the new OS later this year, potentially at its I/O event, which typically occurs in May.
