Google Reassigns AI Browser Agents Team

Google has initiated changes within the team responsible for Project Mariner, its AI agent designed to navigate the Chrome browser and perform user tasks. Staff from this research prototype are being reassigned to higher-priority projects, according to internal sources. A Google spokesperson confirmed these shifts, emphasizing that the developed computer-use capabilities will be integrated into the company's overall agent strategy.

These advancements are being folded into other agent products, such as the recently launched Gemini Agent. This strategic adjustment aligns with the rapid evolution of AI agents, like OpenClaw, which are increasingly seen as foundational for future general-purpose assistants. The industry is witnessing a significant momentum shift away from browser-based agents towards command-line agents, which have proven more efficient for task completion.

While browser agents like Perplexity's Comet and OpenAI's ChatGPT Agent have seen limited adoption, newer models like Claude Code and OpenClaw demonstrate superior performance via text-based command-line interactions. This efficiency is attributed to significantly fewer computational steps required. Innovations, such as Standard Intelligence's video-trained model, continue to push the boundaries of AI in computer interaction, even enabling autonomous driving demonstrations.
