Google Play Age API: Privacy-First Verification Rolls Out Globally

Google has announced the global expansion of its Play Age Signals API, designed to assist developers in verifying user ages without compromising privacy. This new system leverages Google's existing Family Link app, allowing parents to establish and manage age-based content access for their children's accounts. These age ranges are dynamic and adapt as children grow.

Initially tested last year, the API's rollout is accelerating following the implementation of age verification laws in several US states, including Texas, Louisiana, and Utah. While opponents argue these laws place undue burden on tech firms, the Supreme Court's recent decision has allowed some of these measures to take effect.

The Play Age Signals API, which began its beta in Brazil, is now extending to Australia and Canada. Google anticipates that developers in all countries, including the United States, will have access to this feature by the end of 2026.

While the API aims for compliance and provides a new tool for age-appropriate content delivery, it relies on voluntary user participation and parental setup. It is not a foolproof method against determined minors but fulfills jurisdictional requirements for app store age verification. Developers are encouraged to integrate this API to align with content ratings and new regulations.
