11 Oct
Summary
- Google Pixel phones now receive seven years of software updates.
- This update includes both OS upgrades and security patches.
- Previously, Android phones lost value due to short software support.
Google announced a major policy shift in 2023 with the release of the Pixel 8, promising seven years of software updates for its Pixel devices. This comprehensive support includes both critical security patches and substantial operating system upgrades.
This extended update window surpasses previous industry standards, including offers from major manufacturers like Samsung. Historically, short software support lifecycles have negatively impacted the resale value of Android smartphones.
Google's commitment to seven years of updates for Pixels addresses a key consumer concern. The service window for a Pixel phone begins in the month of its US Google Store availability.
