Google has announced an expansion of its real-time translation tools for Google Meet, a feature previously confined to desktop users and limited business groups. This update will bring the capability to Android and iOS devices in the coming months, broadening access for more desktop users as well.
Despite the expansion, significant limitations remain. Access is still restricted to specific business and education users, as well as individuals with Google AI Pro or Ultra subscriptions, which range from $20 to $250 monthly. Additionally, Workspace users will receive promotional access for at least 60 days before daily usage limits are enforced.
Competitors like Skype and Zoom also offer real-time translation features, with Zoom providing real-time translated captions. While these alternatives exist, Google's integration into a widely used platform like Meet, with anticipated future rollout to regular Google account holders, marks a notable advancement in accessible communication tools.
