Summary
- Street View now integrates with Project Genie for interactive environments.
- Users can simulate weather and different environmental conditions.
- The tool aids robotics training and self-driving car simulations.

Google DeepMind has launched a significant integration, connecting its Street View data with Project Genie, a versatile world model capable of generating diverse, interactive environments. This new feature, unveiled at the Google I/O developer conference, allows users to create immersive simulations of real-world locations.
Users can explore simulated environments with adjustable weather patterns or even visualize future scenarios, enhancing experiences for both human interaction and robotics applications. For instance, a robot deployed in London could be trained on rare sunny days to prevent sensor shock.
This advancement builds on Google's two decades of collecting over 280 billion Street View images across 110 countries. Project Genie, already powering Waymo's simulators for self-driving cars, will now benefit from Street View's extensive real-world data.
Initially available to some U.S. Google AI Ultra subscribers, the feature is set to expand globally in the coming weeks. Researchers acknowledge that the technology is experimental and accuracy is still developing, with simulations currently resembling video game graphics rather than photorealism and lacking physics awareness.
Despite current limitations, the AI demonstrates impressive spatial continuity, accurately remembering and simulating environments as users virtually navigate them. This integration marks a significant step towards building richer world models based on Street View data.
