Google's Gemini AI Powers New Smart Speaker

Google is significantly updating its smart speaker lineup with the introduction of the $99.99 Google Home Speaker, designed around its Gemini AI. This marks the first dedicated audio device for Gemini from the tech giant since the Nest Audio in September 2020.

The new speaker allows users to issue commands using natural language, including complex multi-step requests and mid-sentence corrections. For example, users can specify exceptions when turning off lights or manage multiple smart home actions simultaneously.

Beyond smart home tasks, the device will offer new AI-driven voices capable of two-way conversations on various topics. The 'Continued Conversation' feature will permit follow-up questions without repeating the wake word, enabling a more natural interaction flow.

However, enhanced AI capabilities will be available through a Google Home Premium subscription at $10 per month. This plan unlocks features like Gemini Live for free-flowing chats and tools for analyzing Nest camera footage or summarizing home activity during absences.

Google is offering a six-month trial of these premium features to encourage adoption. The Google Home Speaker is available for pre-order now and will begin shipping later this month, potentially revitalizing the smart speaker market with advanced generative AI.
