Google Home speakers gobbling data!
20 Oct
Summary
- Bug since October causes Google Home speakers to download large data amounts.
- One speaker reportedly consumed 3.3TB of data last month.
- Google confirms a fix is rolling out to address the issue.

Some Google Home speakers have been experiencing a significant issue since early October, leading to unexpectedly large data consumption. Reports have surfaced detailing speakers downloading gigabytes, and in one extreme case, terabytes of data without clear reason.
This problem appears to be caused by a bug, possibly related to failed firmware updates. Users have shared instances where their speakers consumed 17GB in 24 hours, or 3.3TB over the past month, and even an attempt to download 140GB overnight. Other Google Home devices in the same households have also shown massive data usage.
Google has acknowledged the problem and stated that a fix is currently being deployed. While the company did not specify the exact cause, they assured users that the solution is rolling out. Customers experiencing this issue are advised to check their router data usage and consider temporarily disabling their speakers if on a limited data plan.
