Google Gemini AI: Free & Plus Users Face Model Cuts
4 Oct
Summary
- Gemini's best AI models are being removed from free and Plus tiers.
- Users will lose access to Pro and Flash models starting October 9.
- Changes align Gemini's tiered access with competitor offerings.

Google is implementing substantial changes to how users access its Gemini AI models, impacting those on the free and AI Plus subscription tiers. Effective October 9, 2026, users without a specific AI subscription will be limited to the Gemini Flash-Lite (3.5) model for "fastest answers." The more advanced Flash (3.6) "all around help" and Pro (3.1) "advanced reasoning" models will no longer be available to them.
Subscribers to the $4.99/£4.49/AU$7.99 AI Plus plan will also see a reduction in access, losing the Pro (3.1) model but retaining Flash (3.6). Higher tiers, AI Pro and AI Ultra, remain unchanged, with AI Pro gaining a "Deep Think" mode for enhanced reasoning. Google cites the high cost of AI compute as a likely reason for these restrictions, potentially encouraging more users to upgrade their subscriptions.
These adjustments align Google's Gemini access strategy with that of competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT, which also differentiates model access based on subscription status. Usage limits, previously varied by query numbers, will now also be influenced by model availability, with paid users generally having higher allowances than free users. Usage limits refresh periodically, both hourly and weekly, depending on prompt complexity.
