Pentagon Embraces Google's Gemini AI for 3M Staff
10 Mar
Summary
- Google's Gemini AI agents are now available to over 3 million DoD employees.
- Eight pre-built agents will automate tasks, with custom options available.
- Expansion accelerates as DoD broadens AI partnerships post-Anthropic deal.

Google is deploying its Gemini AI agents to the Department of Defense's workforce of over 3 million civilian and military personnel. These agents will initially function on unclassified networks, with discussions ongoing to extend their use to classified and top-secret systems.
Eight pre-built agents are designed to automate various tasks, including summarizing meeting notes, constructing budgets, and aligning proposed actions with the national defense strategy. Defense Department personnel can also develop their own custom agents by using natural language commands.
The Pentagon's GenAI.mil portal has already seen significant adoption of Google's AI chatbot since December, with 1.2 million employees utilizing it for unclassified work. Despite widespread use, AI training has lagged, though future sessions are fully booked.
This AI rollout intensifies as the DoD expands its artificial intelligence partnerships, particularly after classifying Anthropic as a 'supply chain risk.' The move comes amid employee calls for ethical AI guardrails, with Google having updated its 'AI Principles' in early February.
