Google Classroom Adds AI Chatbot for All Students

Google recently enabled its Gemini chatbot for students of all ages within its widely-used Classroom app. This new feature allows students to seek AI assistance for tasks like math problems and writing assignments, and to generate study aids such as quizzes and flashcards. The move intensifies the ongoing competition between major technology firms, including Apple, Google, and Microsoft, to secure long-term customer relationships by introducing their AI tools to K-12 students.

Despite the push for AI integration, parent groups in several major cities are advocating for a pause on student AI product rollouts. These groups cite potential risks to children's safety, privacy, and the development of critical thinking skills. School administrators also express challenges in keeping pace with frequent changes to AI products, highlighting a desire for more control over the adoption of these technologies for students.

Further complicating the landscape, Google plans to introduce a new setting this fall for students under 18. This setting, part of its Search services, will personalize recommendations based on student account data, including search history and location. Some administrators are proactively disabling certain Google services to prevent the automatic activation of such features.
