Google Changes Android Backup Storage Policy This Week
7 Jul
Summary
- Android backup data now counts towards Google Account storage.
- New controls allow users to select data and apps for backup.
- The policy change takes effect on July 7, 2026.

As of July 7, 2026, Google is implementing a significant change to how it calculates account storage for Android users. All data within Android backups will now contribute to an individual's Google Account storage limit. This policy update aims to offer users enhanced transparency and control over their backed-up information.
Previously, only specific media files and MMS data were factored into the storage cap. The new approach will be immediately effective for new Android users, while existing users will see the adjustments implemented over the coming months.
Google has stated that this change is expected to increase storage usage by an average of only 40MB per user. To manage this, users will gain access to new controls within their device's backup menu. These controls will allow users to selectively exclude data such as device settings, call history, and SMS/MMS messages from the backup process, alongside existing options to toggle individual app data.
