Google Unveils AI Watermark for All Content
19 May
Summary
- Google's AI detection now extends to Chrome and Search.
- SynthID invisible watermarks are now compatible with multiple AI tools.
- Over 100 billion images and videos use Google's SynthID.

Google announced a significant expansion of its AI content detection capabilities during its annual Google I/O event. The company's SynthID invisible watermark system, initially limited to the Gemini app, will now be integrated into Google Chrome and Google Search.
This enhancement allows users to identify AI-generated content through features like Circle to Search or by right-clicking on images online. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai stated that SynthID has been applied to over 100 billion images and videos, along with 60,000 years of audio assets.
Previously, SynthID could only identify content created by Gemini. However, Google is broadening its reach through partnerships with other AI developers, including OpenAI and ElevenLabs, as well as Nvidia, which began using SynthID last year.
Pichai emphasized the growing necessity for transparency as generative AI advances. The expansion of content credentials verification across Google's products aims to clearly indicate whether content originated from AI or a camera, and if it has been modified using generative AI tools, setting a new standard for AI transparency.
