AI Rewrites News Headlines, Often Incorrectly
23 Mar
Summary
- Google AI modifies news headlines in Search, causing errors.
- Changes strip context, making some titles difficult to understand.
- Similar AI headline issues occurred with Google Discover.

Google is currently testing an artificial intelligence system designed to rewrite news headlines displayed in its Search results. Early observations suggest this AI-powered tool is not yet fully prepared for deployment, as it has been seen to alter original headlines inaccurately.
These modifications have, in some instances, led to misleading or nonsensical titles. For example, a headline detailing an experience with an AI tool was shortened to a confusing phrase. Another headline about a Disney Parks robot lost its initial three words, starting with a lowercase letter and losing essential context.
Google stated to The Verge that these changes are part of an experiment to enhance titles in Search and increase engagement with web content. This initiative comes at a time when traffic to news sites has seen a notable decrease globally, according to recent data. A similar AI system tested for Google Discover also encountered accuracy problems, including misrepresenting a story about a drone ban.
This situation echoes past challenges with AI-generated content summaries. Apple previously paused its news notification summaries due to incorrect blurbs before reintroducing them several months later.
